The movement, which calls itself the Cockroach Janta party (CJP) and has massive support among gen Zs, returned to the streets to demand the resignation of the chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, months after similar protests forced BJP education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, to step down.
A process to revise and “purify” the electoral register, called the Special Intensive Revision, which was overseen by Kumar, has resulted in tens of millions of people being removed from the electoral register. Large numbers are challenging their exclusion.
Members of parliament from the opposition, including the leader of the opposition, Rahul Gandhi, took to the streets on Tuesday over the revision of voter lists. Hundreds of police officers were deployed, and several opposition politicians were arrested.
