The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague marks 80 years of attempting to resolve international conflicts through law rather than war.
Correspondent Step Vaessen reports from the Peace Palace on the court’s history and its impact on international law. The ICJ has handled more than 200 cases and issued 150 binding judgments, but its authority can be challenged when states reject or fail to implement its rulings.
The report examines landmark cases involving the US intervention in Nicaragua and the Srebrenica genocide, as well as the ongoing South Africa v. Israel case concerning Gaza.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres says international law is being violated “before our eyes”. Expert Iva Vukusic says the court’s effectiveness ultimately depends on whether states are willing to act on its rulings.
