DR Congo: Joseph Kabila aligns with M23 rebels in new political alliance

The True Post icon

Former Democratic Republic of the Congo president Joseph Kabila has aligned himself with M23 rebels, forming a new political alliance known as the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) in Goma. The move presents a new challenge to President Felix Tshisekedi’s government and complicates ongoing efforts to end the conflict in eastern DR Congo.

Authorities in Kinshasa have held emergency meetings as fighting continues in the east. Meanwhile, the African Union and the Luanda framework remain part of diplomatic efforts to secure peace.

In Goma, residents say the continuing conflict is taking a heavy toll on civilians. Serge Kambale and Jean Kase are among those calling for dialogue to end the violence and bring stability to the region.

The alliance raises further questions about the future of peace negotiations and regional security in the Great Lakes region.
