For millions of people in Britain, everyday actions such as boiling an egg, making tea or turning on the heating are getting more expensive. From Thursday, the price cap on a typical household’s annual gas and electricity bill rises from £2,200 to about £2,280 – an £80 increase, roughly £7 a month, a 4% jump. The main driver is the war in the Middle East, which has pushed up gas prices across global markets.
Some UK consumers who fixed their tariffs have delayed the impact, and the government has tried to cushion the blow by removing VAT from electricity bills and maintaining a regulatory price cap on what suppliers can charge per unit. But many households say it is nowhere near enough.
Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands reports from London.
