Britain’s governing Labour Party is gathering in Liverpool for its annual conference, with the cost of living again at the centre of political debate. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to ease pressure on household finances, but rising fuel prices are adding to the strain on families and businesses. Fuel prices have increased amid disruptions to global oil and gas supplies linked to the US-Israel war on Iran. Home care worker Becky Oriowo says higher petrol costs are making it increasingly difficult to cover household expenses, while her work requires her to make up to 16 home visits a day by car. Rising transport and wholesale gas costs are also expected to push up prices and household energy bills. A food bank in East London says donations have fallen as people struggle with higher mortgage, rent, food and fuel costs. For workers such as Becky, rising living costs mean that even long working hours are no longer enough to make ends meet.
