Britain’s Conservative Party is holding its annual conference in Birmingham, fighting to be the main voice of the Right. Not long ago it looked close to collapse, but some projections now have it level with the anti-immigration Reform UK.
In Newark, Nottinghamshire, the sitting MP Robert Jenrick, a former Conservative minister, defected to Reform UK in January. The party has suffered since its worst-ever defeat to Labour in 2024, and Reform was already ahead in the polls. One local voter said people dislike both Labour and the Conservatives and see Reform as the only alternative.
Recent polls paint a mixed picture. In September, YouGov suggested the Conservatives and Reform would be nearly tied, with Labour the biggest party.
