A school roof has collapsed in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 33 people, most of them children aged between seven and 13. Rescue teams and residents used their bare hands and basic tools to clear rubble, hampered by narrow alleys that blocked heavy machinery from reaching the site. The Al Khair middle school building, constructed with steel, wood girders and mud bricks, is reported to have been poorly built. One person has been arrested, and authorities say roof collapses remain common in Pakistan due to weak enforcement of building codes.
