Russia has said it will intensify its strikes on Ukraine, after hundreds of drones struck Moscow, setting a major oil refinery ablaze and striking residential buildings and other targets.
The attack was the biggest on Moscow since the Kremlin launched its Ukraine offensive in 2022. Ukraine fired more than 1,500 drones, 450 of which were aimed directly at Moscow according to the city’s mayor.
The refinery supplies more than a third of the Moscow region’s fuel, according to the defence ministry in Kyiv, which said that some of its petrol, diesel and aviation fuel go to Russia’s military.
The attacks came on the final day of voting in parliamentary elections. Russia’s defence ministry accused Ukraine of attempting to “disrupt the democratic will of Russian citizens” and vowed a response.
Ukrainian officials also said that nine people, including three children, had been killed in Russian attacks in the Kyiv and Sumy regions at the weekend.
Russia and Ukraine have each been intensifying drone and missile strikes on the other’s territory, targeting energy and transport facilities, warehouses and logistics hubs.
