Rennes residents assess damage after France protests turn violent

Residents and business owners in the French city of Rennes are assessing the damage after Saturday’s protests descended into violence, looting and destruction.
Demonstrations began peacefully, with students and members of the Yellow Vest movement gathering before confrontations erupted with police.
Shops were vandalised, storefronts smashed and buildings set alight, leaving business owners frustrated by what they described as senseless destruction.
Despite the unrest, a marathon went ahead on Sunday as residents began cleaning up the damage. Protesters also returned to a central square for a general assembly, insisting that their movement would continue despite the violence.
Rennes, a city known for its left-wing political traditions and history of demonstrations, is among several French cities grappling with the aftermath of widespread unrest.
With protesters determined to continue and no clear resolution in sight, uncertainty remains over France’s political and social crisis.

Al Jazeera’s Rosie Burkhart reports from Rennes, France.
