Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has said the country has faced “exceptional events” amid the US-Israeli war on Iran, while calling for stronger Gulf cooperation to secure shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and protect critical infrastructure. Addressing the Shura Council in Doha, the emir condemned Iranian attacks on Qatar as violations of its sovereignty and international law, while reaffirming the country’s commitment to diplomacy and self-defence. He warned that regional instability has global consequences, particularly for energy supplies and international trade. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz and damage to Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas facilities have disrupted exports, placing further pressure on the economy. The emir outlined plans to expand gas production, diversify the economy and improve fiscal efficiency to strengthen Qatar’s resilience. He also reaffirmed Qatar’s support for Palestinians, called for accountability over Israel’s genocide in Gaza and urged political solutions to conflicts in Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia.
Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi reports from Doha.
