Israel’s diplomatic isolation grows amid dispute with Britain, says Alon Pinkas

Israel’s decision to downgrade the British Consulate in occupied East Jerusalem follows a dispute over Britain’s sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas says the move does not serve Israel’s interests, arguing that the government backed down after Britain warned of diplomatic repercussions.
He says Israel’s threats against Britain and other countries reflect political rhetoric ahead of the October 27 election, while the country faces growing international pressure over its policies in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Pinkas says the dispute is rooted in Israel’s occupation and settlement policy, which he argues is opposed by much of the international community.
He also says a new Israeli government may improve Israel’s diplomatic standing but is unlikely to bring major changes to its policies towards the Palestinians.
