Israeli withdrawal stalls as southern Lebanon residents struggle to rebuild

Residents of Zawtar al Gharbieh in southern Lebanon are struggling to rebuild their lives as a planned phased Israeli military withdrawal remains stalled. Israeli troops have withdrawn from the town but remain stationed nearby, with residents reporting continued gunfire, drone surveillance and destruction. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted that Hezbollah must be fully disarmed before further withdrawals take place, while accusing the Lebanese government of failing to meet its obligations. Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy visited the area to express solidarity with Lebanon but offered no specific assistance to residents seeking help to rebuild their homes. Meanwhile, Lebanese and Israeli military delegations are meeting at US Central Command in Florida to discuss security arrangements. A Lebanese army source told Al Jazeera that its command would resist pressure for direct military coordination in the south, amid concerns that such demands could deepen internal tensions.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reports from Zawtar al Gharbieh, Lebanon.
