Israel’s general election on October 27 is being closely watched in Lebanon and Syria, where the Israeli military continues to occupy hundreds of square kilometres of territory. Many residents remain sceptical that a change in government will alter Israeli policy, fearing instead that military operations could intensify ahead of the vote. Even Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, has called for continued military pressure and Hezbollah’s disarmament, suggesting little prospect of de-escalation regardless of the election’s outcome.
