Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon has reshaped the region, with the military extensively destroying predominantly Shia villages it views as Hezbollah’s support base. Nearby Christian villages have been told they will be spared the same demolition policy if they remain neutral in the conflict, but life there is still far from normal.
In Marjayoun district, residents describe a paralysed economy. A journey from Beirut that once took about 90 minutes now takes over three hours because of the occupation.
Families in nearby Qlayaa describe nightly explosions shaking their homes, shattering windows and keeping children from school, along with water, electricity and healthcare shortages. Residents say they need major assistance to keep living there.
Even away from the occupied areas, Israel’s campaign has upended lives, leaving what one resident calls isolated pockets surrounded by ruins.
