Human rights are now a familiar phrase, but the idea was revolutionary when the UN paved the way for the Universal Declaration in 1948. Since then, UN peacekeepers have had mixed records in conflicts from Sierra Leone to Rwanda and Bosnia, while agencies like WHO helped eradicate smallpox and respond to COVID‑19. Other UN bodies quietly coordinate phone and internet standards, global shipping rules and shared weather data. Together, they give countries a framework to cooperate on almost every major issue.
