UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has delivered his final address to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, warning that global divisions are deepening and calling for fundamental reforms to international institutions.
Guterres identifies four major challenges: peace, inequality, the climate emergency and artificial intelligence. He condemns the “onslaught” in Gaza, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and what he describes as a “war on civilians” in Sudan.
He also calls for Africa to have permanent representation on the UN Security Council, urges greater climate justice and advocates for accountable governance of artificial intelligence. Guterres concludes by reaffirming UN values as he approaches the end of his term.
