This weekend marks one year since the 2025 Gaza ceasefire was implemented, brokered by the United States, Qatar and Egypt. One of its key terms was the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, alongside the creation of US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace to oversee a 20-point plan for Gaza’s governance and reconstruction. But Israeli killing in Gaza has continued almost daily, with more than 1,400 Palestinians killed since the ceasefire, according to the programme’s introduction. Nayef al-Nabet, affiliate faculty at the Carter School at George Mason University, told Al Jazeera that Qatar made significant efforts to reach agreements between Israel and Hamas. He noted that Qatar was attacked during the mediation process, referring to the Israeli strike in Doha targeting Hamas leaders before the peace plan was signed. Al-Nabet said Hamas and other Palestinian parties had fulfilled their parts of the agreement and disarmed themselves, but argued that Israel had shown no progress in fulfilling its commitments. He also argued that Israel presents itself as facing threats from across the region, using this narrative to legitimise its policies and identify new enemies, including Qatar and Turkiye. On Yemen, al-Nabet said Qatar supports Saudi Arabia’s measures to defend its sovereignty against Houthi attacks. He stressed that the US-Iran conflict and the Saudi-Houthi conflict are separate conflicts that must not merge, warning that doing so could become a catastrophe for the region and the wider world.
