Israeli restrictions on essential and so-called “dual-purpose” goods have contributed to severe shortages in Gaza, forcing Palestinians to repair, reuse and recycle items to keep their livelihoods going.
Local craftsmen such as Shaher Al Halou and Abdullah Alay repair old batteries, tires and other goods that are difficult or expensive to replace. New tires can reportedly cost up to $2,000, compared with around $60 before the war.
Amid the rubble of destroyed buildings, workers including Mohammad Abu Asi manually extract steel reinforcements and other scrap metal to sell as raw materials.
The report shows how Palestinians are repurposing whatever materials they can as they try to survive amid the ongoing conflict and blockade.
