Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten has spoken to Al Jazeera in New York about Gaza, the West Bank, Ukraine, Iran and the Netherlands’ relationship with the United States.
Jetten says the Netherlands supports stronger European action against the Israeli government and has joined countries imposing sanctions on goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. He also discusses the decision to deny Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas a US visa while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attends the UN General Assembly.
On Palestine, Jetten says the Netherlands supports a two-state solution and is increasing financial support for the Palestinian Authority and UNRWA, while recognition of Palestine remains under debate in the Dutch parliament.
Jetten also addresses the prospect of Russian President Vladimir Putin attending the G20, the war in Ukraine and the Netherlands’ position on negotiations. On Iran, he says he urged President Masoud Pezeshkian to return to negotiations and called for freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Dutch prime minister says Europe can withstand the coming winter with existing gas supplies and storage, but argues that the region needs to accelerate its energy transition. He also calls for continued US-European cooperation and says the Netherlands will oppose efforts to undermine the International Criminal Court.
