Drone strikes are now the leading cause of civilian deaths in Sudan, UN says

Drone warfare is having a devastating impact on civilians in Sudan, where fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) increasingly involves attacks from the sky.

The United Nations says drone strikes have become the leading cause of civilian deaths, killing at least 1,120 people in the first six months of this year.

The army says it hit RSF command centres on Friday in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur and a major RSF stronghold, killing dozens of fighters. The RSF and its allies accuse the army of striking a crowded livestock market, killing civilians.

In recent weeks, suspected RSF drone strikes in Blue Nile and West Kordofan states have killed dozens of civilians, including near a displacement camp.

The International Organization for Migration says more than 10,000 people were displaced in Blue Nile between September 26 and October 4.
