A devastating fire at a military training base in Wainwright, Alberta, has caused casualties and placed significant pressure on local medical services, with some injured people transferred to hospitals in other towns.
Local resident Brandon Simmons described a chaotic scene, comparing it to a war movie and recalling the sounds of people trapped in vehicles as the fire spread.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the nation, mourning those who lost their lives and saying they had been training to defend Canada. He described the incident as one of the country’s worst peacetime tragedies for its armed forces.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fast-moving blaze as the community and the country respond to the tragedy.
