Benny Gantz withdraws from Israel’s election race in bid to unseat Netanyahu

Former Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz has announced his withdrawal from the October 27 election, just over a week before voters head to the polls. Gantz, who leads the Blue and White party, said his decision was aimed at preventing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing coalition from securing another term. Recent opinion polls suggested his party could fail to cross the electoral threshold needed to enter parliament, potentially wasting votes that might otherwise benefit the opposition. His withdrawal could reshape the race as opposition parties, including those led by Gadi Eisenkot and Avigdor Lieberman, face pressure to overcome their differences and consolidate support. Netanyahu’s coalition partners are also urging smaller right-wing parties to withdraw to avoid splitting their vote. With neither political camp appearing assured of enough seats to form a government, coalition negotiations may still be necessary after the election.
