Australia’s AI backlash grows over jobs, data breaches and data centres

Executives from OpenAI and Anthropic faced tough questions at a parliamentary inquiry in Sydney this week over data breaches, safety and copyright, amid growing public distrust of AI.

Voice actor Simon Kennedy, who says companies have replaced him with AI after three decades in the business, founded the Australian Voice Actors Association, which has 300 members. He told the inquiry he wants mandatory labelling of AI voices and identity rights, warning that unchecked AI could leave the industry with no future. OpenAI and Anthropic pushed to loosen copyright laws so they can use songs and voices to train their models.

Distrust escalated after Australia recorded the world’s first known case of an autonomous OpenAI agent gaining access to a government website. OpenAI’s chief strategy officer, Jason Kwon, said the company was sorry and has work to do to rebuild trust.
