Amid the tacos and tamales of Mexico City’s street food scene, Palestinian brothers Fadi and Mohammed Abed now serve falafel and shawarma, bringing a taste of home to their new city. Fadi says Mexicans have taken to the food, even as he mourns what he left behind: a warehouse, three houses and three cars in Palestine, all gone. He arrived with nothing, but is “getting by little by little,” he says.
The brothers arrived in Mexico in 2025 with their families after their father, a Mexican citizen, helped secure their evacuation from Gaza. They had no phones or money, borrowing about $50 to set up stalls now two kilometres apart.
