Candiru spyware: Malicious ads targeted NATO, UN and Al Jazeera

A discovery by Citizen Lab has raised fresh concerns about digital surveillance after the Israeli firm Candiru allegedly used malicious digital advertisements to deliver zero-click spyware targeting major organisations, including NATO, the United Nations and Al Jazeera.

Professor Ramesh Srinivasan of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), joins the programme to discuss how sophisticated micro-targeting can compromise mobile devices without users having to click on an advertisement.

The discussion examines the wider history of Israeli-linked surveillance technology, including Pegasus spyware, and the challenges governments face in regulating powerful technology and surveillance companies.

Srinivasan argues that existing regulation is failing to protect public privacy, while the design of modern digital platforms often leaves users unaware of how their personal data is collected and tracked.

The segment explores the implications of increasingly sophisticated spyware and the need for stronger public accountability and protections for digital privacy.
