Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of Ebola after a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo died while receiving treatment in Nairobi. The patient had travelled by road from the DRC through Uganda before flying to Kenya, raising concerns about how he passed through health screening systems despite the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the region. Eight family members and 21 healthcare workers who had contact with him were initially placed under quarantine, while authorities expanded contact tracing to passengers and crew on the flight. Kenyan President William Ruto has ordered an enhanced government response, with surveillance, testing and isolation measures being strengthened across the country. Isolation facilities are being prepared at hospitals and other locations to handle suspected cases, including people arriving across Kenya’s borders. Health officials say the public should remain calm and insist the country has the capacity to respond to any additional cases. The case is linked to the Ebola outbreak in the DRC, which has recorded more than 8,000 confirmed cases and more than 4,000 deaths, making it the country’s worst Ebola outbreak.
