Israel’s ‘total victory’ goal in Gaza is unattainable, says Alon Pinkas

Families in Gaza have been waiting nearly three years to find and bury the remains of their loved ones. Israeli attacks have continued despite a US-brokered ceasefire, while there has been no meaningful reconstruction.
Alon Pinkas, a former Israeli ambassador and consul general in New York, told Al Jazeera that Israel’s objective of “total victory” was not attainable then and is not attainable now.
He said Israel wants to hold Gaza without being responsible for Gaza, while the only way to achieve total victory would be to occupy the entire Strip.
Pinkas said the Board of Peace may exist on paper but does not really exist, and Israel has been encroaching.
He noted that under the agreement, Israel was supposed to withdraw but did not, while Hamas was supposed to disarm but did not.
Pinkas called the idea of depopulating Gaza impractical, saying roughly two million people are homeless and lack basic necessities.
He said a new Israeli government might allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza and reduce settler violence in the West Bank, but Palestinians should not expect anything dramatic.
