More than 10,000 troops have been deployed in Bangkok to help evacuate residents caught up in major flooding, after all 50 of the Thai capital’s districts were declared disaster zones. Heavy rain has overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems, and temporary shelters have been set up for more than 4,000 people forced from their homes.
Residents are frustrated that lessons from Bangkok’s 2011 floods, including calls to clean out canals and improve irrigation, were never fully acted on, leaving the same infrastructure under strain again. A similar crisis hit the southern city of Hat Yai last year. Residents say they don’t expect the government to control the rain, but want more effective, better-prepared administrations, as more heavy rain is forecast.
