An oil refinery was damaged in Moscow after Ukraine launched a major attack on the city and other parts of Russia. The attack involved hundreds of drones and the first acknowledged use of ballistic missiles. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that short range ballistic Pelican missiles were among the weapons used. These missiles have an estimated range of about 350km (217 miles), not enough to reach Moscow directly.
The mayor of Moscow, Sergey Sobyanin, said more than 1,600 drones had been intercepted and shot down, 450 of which were aimed at Moscow, and accused Ukraine of attempting to interfere with the highly controlled three-day election that is set to tighten president Vladimir Putin’s 26-year grip on power.
