Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis towards Riyadh at dawn on Saturday, according to the Saudi-led coalition, which also said attempts to target civilians and civilian infrastructure in Bisha, Taif, Farasan and Yanbu were thwarted. The interception came after Saudi Arabia issued emergency alerts across the kingdom, with residents in Riyadh reporting an explosion and a large plume of black smoke near King Khalid International Airport. Saudi authorities reported no casualties or damage. The Houthis said they had attacked “sensitive” sites in Riyadh and an Aramco facility in Yanbu using ballistic and cruise missiles and drones, but those claims could not be independently verified. The latest escalation follows weeks of renewed fighting between Saudi-backed forces and the Houthis, with clashes also intensifying in several parts of Yemen.
