As world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, Inside Latin America looks at the UN from a Latin American perspective.

From peacekeeping and political crises to hunger, migration and development, the United Nations has played a major role across the region for decades.

This year, several candidates from Latin America are competing to replace Secretary-General Antonio Gutierrez, amid calls for the next Secretary-General to come from Latin America — and for the first woman to lead the organisation. This is a critical moment for the organisation, as the UN faces major budget and staffing cuts just as humanitarian needs, migration, organised crime, and climate emergencies put increasing demands on its agencies.
